i have been working with elijah for probably the last year to get potty trained!! to put it simply, he has not been interested AT ALL!!! this has frustrated me to no end!! during this last year i have mentioned to him about just sitting on the potty and he FREAKS out...literally, he starts whining and fussing and saying his legs will hurt?!?!?! (i'm still not sure what all that is about)
i have tried to bribe him with suckers, m & m's, ice cream, etc. you name it i've tried it! each time i ask him why he doesn't want to sit on the potty, he says, "i'm waiting on daddy to come home"!! wow...what do you say to that???
so, the last month or so i have been starting to 'freak' out myself. he will be 4 in july and is not the least bit interested! i'm thinking to myself 'oh my word...my child is going to be the one who goes to kindergarten with a pull-up on". in reality, i know that won't happen and i know in the future i will look back at this milestone and probably laugh. i haven't ever met or heard of anybody simply not being potty-trained!! having said all of that...this still bothers me. i ask myself often 'why am i so bothered by this'? is it because my friends kids are potty trained and they are younger or what?!?! honestly, that is not it all. as a mom, this is a huge milestone for a child and i want him to master it before the age of four!!! maybe the biggest reason is because he is about BUST out of his diapers!!!! LITERALLY!!
HOWEVER, this afternoon right after nap time i put john daniel in the bath tub and let him play. elijah wanted to get in and bathe with him. i had no problem at all with that but, i told him he was going to sit on the potty and use the potty BEFORE he got in the bath. the child went CRAZY!! i think he cried for 15 minutes while sitting on the potty! needless to say, my stress level was at the breaking point. i stood my ground and was not going to let him get in UNTIL HE WENT POTTY!! i didn't care how long we stayed in that bathroom. thank the lord that john daniel loves bath time!! he was oblivious to the screaming 3 year old just a few feet away!! after about 25 minutes (15 of which e was crying) elijah said mommy i went pee-pee! being skeptical, i said let's see!!! LOW AND BEHOLD, he had gone pee-pee and it doesn't matter to me that is was just a little bit. i was so proud and began doing this crazy, excited dance! he was so proud of himself!! :)
after we cleaned out this potty, bathed him and put on his jammies (with big boy underwear) we went downstairs. we took the potty with us because i was going to keep on him about going. i gave him some juice and then sat him back on the potty while he watched 'handy manny'!!! he did very well the rest of the night.
all in all, at the end of the night...he had gone 3 times on the potty!!
i am one proud mommy and he is one happy 3 year old!!
so, we are on our way...
sorry, if this post is full of grammatical errors -- i am sooo tired!!

yay elijah!!!
Jenn, You will not be the only one struggling to get a child potty trained. If it makes you feel better, Ashton still struggles at night and with poopy. He is 5 1/2. I would say that he is trained, but as with anything he has aspects that he struggles with. He never has accidents at school. He wears underpants all the time. Caleb on the other hand, decided one day that he wanted to be trained and low and behold he is. He is 100% trained day and night. I did nothing to train him, it was all his doing. Every child is different and you just need to keep it in perspective. Kids will do what they need to do when they need to do it. Keep working with him, but don't stress. There are far more things that are considered worse. He is a healthy boy and being strong minded will be an asset some day.
